OVERVIEW

The 2012 Summer Arts Institute features week-long classes in visual arts for rising 1st-8th grade students from June 11 - August 3, 2012. All classes are lead by professional artists and run from 9 AM to Noon, 1 PM to 4 PM or 9 AM to 3 PM.

PAINTING  //  PRINTMAKING OFFERINGS

PAINTING EXPLORATIONS
Students will be introduced to painting techniques using both watercolors and acrylic paint to develop color mixing skills and personal expression and explore still-life, landscape and basic principles and elements of design. Rising 3rd - 6th camp includes an introduction to oil painting, mixed media and screen printing. (1st - 3rd and 3rd - 6th)

ENCAUSTIC PAINTING 
Exploring encaustic painting, a technique of applying color pigment to beeswax, students will learn and apply both traditional and contemporary approaches to this ancient technique. Each day a different method will be taught as the student explores a variety of tools with an emphasis on the student as an individual. (3rd - 6th and 6th - 8th)

COLLAGE AND PRINTMAKING
Using non-toxic inks in vivid colors, students will make their own materials for collage by creating unique prints in the printmaking studio with alumni artist Felicia van Bork. Fast, fun techniques will include rainbow roll, linear trace paint, and paper stamping. The prints will then be cut and torn up to reconfigure as narrative collages. (3rd - 6th)

DRAWING // MIXED MEDIA OFFERINGS

ART OF BOOK MAKING
This class will explore the techniques and concepts of book making. We will begin with making our own journals with a traditional Japanese binding and end with a collaborative book. Students will create four pamphlets joined with a friendship string, a circle book with container, and a back-to-back accordion book or ox-plow quilt book. (1st - 3rd and 3rd - 6th)

CREATE IT + WEAR IT!
Students will make a variety of wearable art. They will learn how to weave warp and weft to create woven bracelets, use recycled paper to create beautiful glass-like beads. Students will also use recycled plastic and beads to create wearable art. The week will finish with creating a batik inspired scarf or t-shirt. (1st - 3rd and 3rd - 6th)

KIDSKETCH
Elements of design from famous modern and contemporary artists will inspire students to use graphite, watercolor pencils and oil pastels in a discovery of nature, architecture and self portraits. Drawing skills will be developed while students learn to embrace different perceptions while developing their own personal style. (1st - 3rd)

INTERNATIONAL ART TRAVELER
Pack your bags as we travel to the exotic locales of Asia, Africa and South America. Students will explore drawing, painting, printing nd mixed media as they discover rich art traditions including Japanese shibori, African mask making, Aztec weaving and more. (1st - 3rd)

NEXT GREAT ARTIST
Based on the show Next Greatest Artist, students will be challenged to create fabulous artwork based on different themes and materials. Contemporary artists and unique materials will be explored and end results will be shared with the group. Everyone wins! (3rd - 6th)


SCULPTURE // DIGITAL MEDIA OFFERINGS

ECO-ART: USING THE ENVIRONMENT
Eco-Art: the practice of art through recognition of the wider universal ecosystem. Using items taken from the environment and recyclable objects, students will make their own paper, glue and paints from natural materials while gaining an appreciation for the rich resources our environment provides for making art. (1st - 3rd and 3rd - 6th)

SCULPTURE: MOSAICS AND CLAY
Students will learn to make their own ceramic tiles or mosaic sculpture. Discussion and demonstration will include design, slab rolling, cutting techniques, surface decoration, relief and glazing. (3rd - 6th and 4th - 6th)

COMMUNITY ART CONNECTIONS
Students will be inspired by art as a catalyst for change as they connect and make a difference in their own community. From handmade recycled beaded jewelry to guerilla gardening in a vacant lot, students will develop their own sense of community connections through the visual arts. (4th - 6th and 6th - 8th)

DIGITAL DRAWING AND PHOTO COLLAGE
Using the digital medium, students will manipulate drawings and photographs by learning to modify an image by adding or changing color, cropping, duplication, drawing and more. In addition, students will take a walking tour of Uptown and speak with our resident artists to spark their imagination and learn how to print high quality digital prints in the Center’s Media Lab. (6th - 8th)

ADVANCE DIGITAL DRAWING AND PHOTO COLLAGE
Students will be working with advanced selection techniques to further their Photoshop skills as they manipulate drawings and photographs to create posters that represent their personal identities. A basic knowledge of the digital media including prior experience with Photoshop or previous enrollment in Digital Drawing and Photo Collage is required. (6th - 8th)

DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY
Bring your digital camera and shoot with Affiliate Artist, JoAnn Sieburg-Baker. This class will teach you about the camera controls and how they affect your photos. Students will spend time shooting around uptown Charlotte. In the media lab students will discuss ways to use the photos and how to prepare them. (6th - 8th)

FULL DAY CAMPS // PARTNERSHIPS

COMMUNITY ART CONNECTIONS
After last summer's huge success with Community Art Connections this class is being offered as a full-day, week-long class for older students. Students will be inspired by art as a catalyst for change as they connect and make a difference in their community. From handmade recycled beaded jewelry to guerilla gardening in a vacant lot, students will develop their own sense of community connections through the visual arts. (4th-6th and 6th-8th)

MCCOLL + BECHTLER MUSEUM OF MODERN ART
PAINTING EXPLORATIONS: POP CULTURE //
June 11-15, 9 AM to 3 PM
Students will tour the Bechtler's new exhibition, Mid-Century Modernism: 1957 and the Bechtler Collection. They will return to McColl Center for Visual Art to create art using a range of mediums, techniques and art styles. Creations will include paper mache figures, an art book, monoprints and a surrealist painting! (4th - 6th) Bechtler members receive member rate.

MCCOLL + BECHTLER MUSEUM OF MODERN ART
SCULPTURE: MOSAICS AND CLAY // June 25-29, 9 AM to 3 PM

Working with alumni Artist Tom Thoune, students will study Niki de Saint-Phalle's iconic Firebird sculpture along with other works from the Bechtler's collection. Then working at the Center, students will design and build their own mosaic clay sculptures. Tom Thoune has studied tesserae mosaic in Italy, and his work can be seen along the Lynx Blue Line. (4th - 6th) Bechtler members receive member rate. 
 
MCCOLL + DISCOVERY PLACE
ART-IN-MOTION // July 30 – August 3, 9 AM to 3 PM
Students will visit Discovery Place to learn about kinetics & movement. Incorporating found objects into their creations, students will study wind movement to create mobiles and wind chimes, use simple machines to create a marshmallow launcher and learn how gears can be used to make a marble painting. (4th - 6th)

MCCOLL + NORTH CAROLINA DANCE THEATRE
PERFORMING A PAINTING
// July 30 - August 3, 9 AM to 12 PM
After a brief introduction to art history, students will select a painting to bring to life. Working in small groups, students will research the artist and painting, and then create a set and costumes to recreate the scene. Students will also visit the North Carolina Dance Theatre, where they will participate in creative movement sessions. At the end of the week, students will present their life-size creations at the North Carolina Dance Theatre. (1st - 3rd)

CANCELLATION POLICY
Courses with insufficient enrollment will be cancelled at least 48 hours in advance of the first day and a full refund will be provided.

EXTENDED DAY

Campers who enroll in two camps per week can extend their day for $25/week. The Center will provide supervision from noon to 1 PM, lunch not included.

SCHOLARSHIPS
The Center offers scholarships to families who would otherwise be unable to afford high quality arts education. Contact Angela Grauel at agrauel@mccollcenter.org for more information. The Center is recruiting volunteers to assist with the Summer Arts Institute. Students must be at least a rising 9th grader to be eligible. Contact Edward McCray at emccray@mccollcenter.org

REFUNDS
When the course is held as scheduled, the refund policy is as follows: Up to 7 days prior to first class meeting, full tuition will be refunded minus a $20 processing fee. Less than 7 days prior to the first class meeting, 50% of tuition will be refunded minus the $20 processing fee. No tuition refunds will be issued after the course has started.
