Growing up in southernTexas a few miles from the Mexican border, Izel Vargas combines images from Latino, Hispanic, and Anglo popular culture to express the fragmentation of life on the border. His mixed-media compositions explore the impact of immigration laws on issues such as assimilation and displacement. Vargas is a recent graduate of the Master of Fines Arts program at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. He has exhibited his work in galleries and museums throughout the state, in Texas, and Mexico including the Ackland Art Museum in Chapel Hill.
