Julio Gonzalez is a self-taught multidisciplinary artist whose work has been exhibited in galleries and museums throughout the southeast United States. Born to a Honduran mother and a Mexican father, Gonzalez explores through his art his mixed heritage and the feeling of being “from somewhere else.” The artist uses Mexican and Mayan design aesthetics to create works that explore contemporary experiences, specifically human relationships with nature, and questions of value. During his nine-month residency, he will continue his multimedia project, Día de Los Casi Muertos/Day of the Almost Dead, which explores the cultural differences between Mexican and American experiences with death and aging.
Gonzalez’s residency is generously supported by funds raised in honor of Suzanne Fetscher’s legacy.
