CREATING A THREAD

Lots of local and national buzz going on about Daniel McCormick’s environmental art installation at Freedom Park in Charlotte. Last weekend was Community Science Day at the Charlotte Nature Museum and the Women’s Impact Fund – who have generously supported the Carolina Thread Trail – all came out to hear about the museum’s science curriculum, the Thread and Daniel’s project. Reed Perkins was there from Queens University to talk about the work of his environmental science students evaluating the performance of the structures and many people wandered over from the park to check out the art.
Center Director of Residencies & Exhibitions, Ce Scott was in New Orleans last week for the Alliance of Artists Communities annual meeting and some of Daniel’s cronies from the Kala Institute in Berkley, CA were talking up his NC project. The intersection of science, art and ecology continues to gain momentum. Also at Alliance was Mel Chin, an NC artist who is using “fundred dollar bills” to clean up lead contamination in New Orleans. Talks are gaining momentum among the Center, Carolina Thread Trail and others about a long-term master plan for restorative, ecological science and art interventions along the trail. Stay tuned.
