Sonya Clark // Richmond, VA
Knight Artist-In-Residence
Sonya Clark has been obsessed with hair as a medium and subject in her artwork. For her, hairdressing is the first form of fiber art. Just as clothing can be read, how, what, and why we "do" our hair is culturally significant. So come to hear how this all plays out in art and wear your best hairdo. Sonya Clark received a BFA from the Art Institute of Chicago and an MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art. She has exhibited her work in over 250 museums and galleries internationally and has been awarded the Pollock-Krasner Award, a Rockefeller Foundation Residency and a Smithsonian Artist Research Fellowship. Sonya Clark is in residence at the Center from July 15 to August 19, 2011 in studio 315.
Thu Kim Vu // Quan Tay Ho, Vietnam
Traveling and doodling to interact with the space has been the main inspiration for Thu Kim Vu’s over the last few years by her travels as an artist. During her artist talk, she will share how her artwork has been inspired over her last few years of traveling as an artist to different places and how these cultural experiences have shaped the outcome of her art. Thu Kim received her BFA from the Hanoi University of Fine Arts and her MFA from the Art Institute of Chicago. She has exhibited her work internationally and has been the recipient of an Unesco Aschberg Fellowship. Thu Kim Vu is in residence at the Center from June 1 to August 23, 2011 in studio 221.
