Greetings all, from the wonderful world of interning! I have been the Residencies and Exhibitions Intern here at McColl Center for Visual Art for two months now, and I never cease to learn new things!

For example, last week while setting up an artist welcome reception, I learned how to get a stack of napkins to swirl in an idyllic, geometric pattern. This is a skill that will certainly apply to my real life, in the form of entertaining and as a part of my fervent desire to create art in the real world, in any manner possible. Your surroundings in life should be beautiful, and if they aren’t you should make them so!

Today has been my first day documenting my time here as an intern.  On this beautiful Charlotte day, I have been particularly struck by the light in the first floor exhibition space. Each time I look up, the light beams have shifted and the shadows are falling in new and different ways.

This is particularly appropriate since Heather Lewis, one of the artists exhibiting on the first floor, deals with shadow and light in her installation pieces. My favorite work she has on display is Pay-per-view (Reflections). Luckily for me, this installation is conveniently placed behind the front desk, providing a constant reminder of art to this intern.

I also took a quick trip to visit Felicia van Bork, who is one of our incredibly talented Affiliate Artists. She is at McColl Center for Visual Art on an 11-month program, so she will be here through March 26 of 2012! Her studio door is always open, and she is often seen flitting gracefully from her studio to the print studio next door, as she works on her latest project.

Sharon Dowell, a 2011 Summer Affiliate Artist, stopped in for a visit as I was talking to Felicia and she was kind enough to strike a pose!

As I saw these artists interacting, and reflected on the jubilant welcome reception for our new artists, I realized that it all comes back to community. That’s one of the reasons that I love this place so much: this is truly a community for artists from all walks of life, and all manner of disciplines, to interact, share ideas, and grow.

All the Best,
Hannah Caddell
