Throughout history the creative expression of ideas and emotions has been a powerful force in the social landscape. It is recognized that art activates critical dialogue and raises political and social awareness. In honor of the 2012 Democratic National Convention, McColl Center for Visual Art continues this tradition by providing a platform for five contemporary artists who live and work in the United States to address our tumultuous world. The site-specific works created for America Now was created during each artist's term as a DNC Artist-in-Residence.
“The core of the exhibit couples aesthetic perspective with social commentary and is the outcome of five artists who are grappling with their own complex questions about America’s contemporary culture. Using art as a catalyst, we hope this exhibition will spark dialogue, both in and outside of the gallery space, and help to encourage a politically informed community.” says Suzanne Fetscher, President/CEO of McColl Center for Visual Art. >> Click here for more info

McColl Center for Visual Art is pleased to welcome two very special guests, Herb Jackson and Alan Michael Parker, for a special event during the America Now opening reception. At 7 PM, attendees are invited to the ground level of McColl Center for Visual Art for 10 Days and Long Division: An Evening of Art and Poetry where award-winning painter Herb Jackson and poet Alan Michael Parker will present their collaborative work, 10 Days, and Parker will read selections from his newly published seventh book of poems, Long Division (review). 10 Days documents a collaboration between the poet, Alan Michael Parker and artist, Herb Jackson. Each created a work on the same predetermined day for 10 sessions over the course of a year and three months. There was no communication about the result on those days or over the course of the project. Neither knew what the other had done until the complete collaboration was revealed one night last December.
