Join us for a free artist talk during Open Studio Saturday on October 27 at 1 PM when alumna artist Marcia Jones conducts an in-depth discussion about her “Displaced Oshun Theory” and her provocative works of art that were featured in the Harvey B. Gantt Center exhibition, Live and in Stereo(type).

Marcia Jones raised eyebrows when her mixed media work of art juxtaposed imagery of an African mask, million dollar bills featuring the face of First Lady Michelle Obama, and an exotic dancer.

As the time draws near for Charlotte to vote in this election, Jones invites the public to join a discussion about her confrontational work and to explore the reasoning for why she depicted Michelle Obama in such a provocative — and misunderstood — manner.

“In recognition of the lack of awareness towards the current political climate regarding women's bodies during this election season,” Jones stated, “my current work utilizes a surprisingly intricate and beautiful methodology grounded in matriarchal philosophy that specifically needs to be addressed to ignite women’s voices.”
