BEHIND THE SCENES

"I was intrigued by the manner in which Joyce’s body of work utilized a wide range of media, while remaining so uniform and interconnected (both stylistically and in content). In particular, I loved the interplay between her sculptural pieces displayed on the pedestals. This room was particularly dramatic."
Sara Simmons, Innovation Institute Associate
"I loved that Joyce’s work can come from such a personal place…like addressing her issue about her weight or it can come from a loftier place like addressing violence against women or the idea that we are all a mix of all sorts of backgrounds….that was compelling. I loved the variety of work we have in the exhibit. And I love the video near the kitchen with her mom."
Suzanne Fetscher, President and CEO
"I feel honored that the student work from Forestview High School that was created and inspired by Joyce Scott’s work was included in the exhibition. The student’s work is a wonderful compliment to the quilts in the exhibition, as well as a testimony to their own societal issues – anorexia, abuse, stereotypes, to name a few.
My personal favorite piece in the exhibition is the collection of necklaces. The beadwork is amazingly intricate and each piece has its own narrative."
Devlin McNeil, Director of Education and Outreach
"I enjoyed the amount of different media used in her sculptural pieces which give it an eclectic quality that reflects her personality."
Wesley Lynch, Administrative Assistant
"Having seen images of the work prior to the installation of the exhibition, I was not sure what to expect. But having spent intimate time with each of the pieces during our tour, I was captivated by how tactile the pieces were and how they demanded my respect, the amount of time and energy that went into each piece is commendable."
Susan Jedrzejewski, Marketing and Communications Associate
"I really enjoyed the discussion the staff had around the work titled “Joyce’s Necklace.” Hearing what other people saw in the work compared to my own views and opinions was refreshing and enlightening. All of the work is so beautiful and tactile, it’s a great show!"
Ben Premeaux, Media Lab Associate
