This playground isn't just for kids! Come explore, build, create and celebrate! McColl Center for Visual Art invites everyone young and old, to experience Community Day on Saturday, September 18, 2010 from 11 AM to 4 PM as our resident artists lead visitors through various playful and creative experiences. Community Day is part of the Arts & Science Council’s Cultural Free for All.

Artist-in-Residence, Anthony Schrag from Scotland, will be soliciting help to build a fort and tree-less-tree-house on the front lawn. Lauren DiCioccio from California will challenge you to a game with her hand-embroidered playing cards. Local artist Dan Allegrucci will be printing woodblock t-shirts and Patricia Raible will have her “spirit wheel” out and ready for a whirl. In addition, Jonathan Brilliant from Charleston will be teaching participants how to print monotypes on paper and Lori Larusso from Kentucky will celebrate your own birthday or un-birthday with her edible cakes. And Laurie Frick, Carolinas HealthCare Artist-in-Residence from Texas will help participants create collages about "Everything you forgot last week."
Starting at 1 PM, the Center’s inaugural Gantt Center Artist-in-Residence, Fahamu Pecou will be leading Passage of Right: Call & Response where a distinguished panel will question, comment and dialog about the popularization of certain trends and social behaviors celebrated within black male culture and black male identity.
In addition, a five-block sidewalk chalk drawing connecting the Center to Discovery Place will be taking place and the Center will be exhibiting “ZipStir”, site specific installations by Hong Seon Jang and Jonathan Brilliant and the Fall Artist-in-Residence Exhibition on the 2nd and 3rd floor galleries.
