Open House

Thursday, January 24, 2019
6:00–9:00 p.m.

The start of an artist residency season at McColl Center is always a good time, especially this year as we celebrate 20 years. We’ll have art everywhere, beer and wine for sale, and everyone is welcome.

New artists, new exhibition
Open House is your opportunity to meet our new artists-in-residence—Esperanza Cortés, Michael Harrison, Carmella Jarvi, Tom Stanley, Chris Watts, and Antoine Williams—in their studios and get a first look at our winter/spring exhibition, New Works / Alumni Two, featuring alumni artists Felicia van Bork (2005, 2012), Tomoo Kitamura (2012-2013), and Kevin Hogan (2005).

Exhibition performance
Dickson Gallery, first floor
Exhibiting artist Kevin Hogan will perform the completion of a wall drawing with his Ellipse Guide, a large wooden tool he designed and built to drawing his signature ellipses on large canvases and walls. The final live drawing will be part of the New Works / Alumni Two exhibition.

Selected Alumni Artists: 20 Years of Art + Innovation
Second-floor gallery
Featuring recent works by Juan Fuentes (2015), Beverly Smith (2001), and Tom Thoune (2001, 2005) to celebrate twenty years of McColl Center. Also included is the original documentation by alumnus artist Marcus Schubert (1999) of his Burning Church Series that helped inaugurate the McColl Center for Art + Innovation in 1999.

Cheat Code performance
Alumni Artist Lounge, second floor
Cheat Code is a poetic performance by alumni artist de’Angelo Dia (2010) which examines the intersectionality of implicit bias, cultural assimilation, and video game culture. The performance and sound installation is inspired by current events and the classic Nintendo games Contra and Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out.
