Unapologetic in her depictions of Blackness as magic, Atlanta-based artist Melissa Alexander captures the often unseen aspects of Black life and livelihood in powerful, beauty-filled portraits and films. Her belief in the integrity of the Black narrative follows Alexander’s current projects relating to Black literature and 1980s south Bronx gang culture. “Every photo, every film, every performance, every interaction is my protest, my resistance, for no one can tell our stories like we.” McColl Center alumnus artist Dr. Fahamu Pecou “checks in” with this emerging artist to get a peek into her process and find out how she elevates her practice despite the unique challenges of our current times.
