Lab Assistants

McColl Center is looking for Lab Assistants to work as independent contractors in the artist labs to maintain the equipment and assist artists who are engaged in McColl Center’s programs.

McColl Center is a non-profit organization whose mission is to champion contemporary artists and spark creative experiences for positive community impact. A nationally acclaimed artist residency and contemporary art space, McColl Center is committed to putting artists first with 360 degrees of support, including artist studios, modern equipment and tools, and exhibition spaces.

Beyond serving as catalyst for artistic advancement, McColl Center is a hub for connection within the creative community. This is a place where all are welcome to share in a universal passion for art and inspiration through creative participation and engagement.

These positions are to provide certain services to McColl Center on an hourly basis. The contractor will agree pursuant to the following scope of work: 

Media Lab Duties and Requirements

  • Spend up to 20 hours per week from July 15, to December 31, 2021, assisting with work in the Media Lab
  • Maintain, update, calibrate, and organize audio/visual equipment, including two Apple 27-inch iMac 3.5 GHz Intel Core i5, 8 GB RAM computers, Adobe Creative Suite and Microsoft Office software, HP Z3200PS 44in Archival Printer, Toshiba 5560C high-speed laser printer, Epson Perfection V500 photo Scanners, Silhouette CAMEO electronic cutter, Nikon D7000 camera, Lowell Ambi-lighting Kits (2x), and Studio Pro Lighting Kit
  • Train artists-in-residence and studio artists to use the equipment in the Lab and assist them with troubleshooting while using equipment
  • Clean and discard old equipment and materials from labs if needed
  • Research options to repair equipment or contact suppliers if needed
  • Inform programming team of any damages or equipment/supply needs

3D Lab Duties and Requirements

  • Spend up to 20 hours per week from July 15, to December 31, 2021, assisting with work in the 3D Lab
  • Maintain, update, calibrate, and organize equipment, including Ultimaker S5 Printer with Material Station and Air Manager, Universal Laser VLS6.60/75, and the lab computer
  • Train artists-in-residence and studio artists to use the equipment in the Lab and assist them with troubleshooting while using equipment
  • Clean and discard old equipment and materials from labs if needed
  • Research options to repair equipment or contact suppliers if needed
  • Inform programming team of any damages or equipment/supply needs

Printmaking Lab Duties and Requirements

  • Spend up to 20 hours per week from July 15, to December 31, 2021, assisting with work in the Printmaking Lab
  • Maintain, update, calibrate, and organize equipment, including Takach etching press, Charles Brand etching press, book press, letterpress, screen-printing Ryonet exposure unit, washout booth and silkscreens, hot plate, vacuum table, and brayers and rollers
  • Train artists-in-residence and studio artists to use the equipment in the Lab and assist them with troubleshooting while using equipment
  • Clean and discard old equipment and materials from labs if needed
  • Research options to repair equipment or contact suppliers if needed
  • Inform programming team of any damages or equipment/supply needs
