Digital Fabrication: Using a Laser Cutter and Engraver

Transform flat surfaces using digital fabrication equipment and learn the principles of laser engraving. During this three-hour workshop, participating artists will learn the process of selecting images for engraving, preparing images for laser processing, and operating the engraver and digital fabrication program. This exploratory course for beginners to the medium introduces essential digital tools and methods that bring a new and exciting dimension to your work. Using cutting-edge technology, discover the possibilities with laser cutting, and learn how to use the tools combined with traditional methods and practices to create something completely original. 

Materials/Tools – Laser cutter and flat materials such as wood, MDF, fabric, and cardboard. The workshop price includes all supplies.

Participants are encouraged to bring their laptops with photo editing software and some high-contrast digital images for potential engraving.

McColl Center lab assistant Jonathan Pellitteri

Instructor – McColl Center lab assistant Jonathan Pellitteri is a Charlotte based artist, whose studio practice focuses on sculptural objects that combine an appreciation for craft with a curiosity for materials and a desire to tell stories. Pellitteri earned a BFA from the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth and Master of Fine Art from Louisiana State University. For his work at Louisiana State University, he was a recipient of the International Sculpture Center Student Achievement in Contemporary Sculpture Award. Pellitteri has served as a visiting artist at several universities; his artwork has been shown in numerous museums and galleries throughout the United States and parts of Europe, and it is included in many public, private, and corporate collections.

Cancelation policy: Participants who cancel enrollment anytime up to 15 days before the first day of a workshop will receive a full refund minus the $23 processing fee. Those who cancel less than 8 days before the first day of a workshop will not receive a refund unless it is a result of a positive COVID diagnosis. If you have tested positive for COVID-19 within 10 days of the start of the workshop, you will receive a credit for a future program. Participants must register and attend the new workshop within ten months.
