Stephanie J. Woods

Stephanie J. Woods is an interdisciplinary artist working in sculpture, photography, collage, installation, and video. Using discarded objects and everyday items such as makeup, synthetic hair weave, and styling gels, Woods urges us to consider our acceptance and enforcement of gender roles, racial signifiers, and beauty standards. Woods is particularly interested in exploring the space between public and private, adorning and obscuring, and presenting versus concealing. Woods earned her BFA in Sculpture and her MFA in Sculpture and New Media from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. She currently works as an educator at Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts in the Arts Foundations Program, Richmond, Virginia. She has attended Penland School of Crafts, Penland, North Carolina; Ox-Bow School of Art and Artists’ Residency, Saugatuck, Michigan; and is the recipient of numerous awards including a 2016 ArtsGreensboro Regional Artist Project Grant, a 2017 State Fellowship from South Arts, and a 2016-2017 North Carolina Arts Council Artist Fellowship. Her work has been exhibited at Field Projects, New York City; Womble Carlyle Gallery at the Milton Rhodes Center for the Arts, Winston-Salem, North Carolina; Southfirst Gallery, Brooklyn, New York; and in 2018 at the Cameron Art Museum, Wilmington, North Carolina and the Mary S. Byrd Gallery, Augusta University, Augusta, Georgia.
