André Leon Gray

André Leon Gray Headshot for website

Self-trained artist André Leon Gray (he/him) explores power structures within the world and their impact on social hierarchy, race relations, and the links between cultural perceptions and the systems that have enforced marginalization. His works focus on issues that have a long-lasting impact on the African American community.

Past, present and the concept of race are represented and integrated into Gray’s artworks. The use of merging words from various forms of mass communication, the discarded and reclaimed objects that portray sociopolitical lived experiences of people are key elements included in the narratives of his installations, mixed media, and paintings and create thought-provoking experiences.
