Beverly Y. Smith's choice of medium, quilting, and graphite drawing stems from her love of color and shape as well as her appreciation of the functional and historical significance of quilts. Stitched collages of photographs and artifacts celebrate her Southern roots and African American heritage. Inspired by her appreciation of any experience that provides an opportunity to give voice to the richness of an African American experience, more importantly, an experience that provides an opportunity to communicate, to connect, and to share. Smith's quilts provide tactile educational experiences about history and spirituality.
