Don Cheek discovered clay at the age of 56 and went on to study at Central Piedmont Community College and Penland School of Crafts in order to pursue his new passion. In 1997, his work was selected as a winning entry at the Monarch National Ceramic Competitiion, one of the premiere ceramic competitions nationwide. He is interested in combining clay with other art forms such as painting, photography and metal working. His work is about presenting ideas that ask the viewer to see things in new and unexpected ways, exploring those visions and emotions that lurk at the edge of our consciousness.
