For Laird Lanier, the study of mobiles inspired him to aquire a degree in Mechanical Engineering at NC State University. Laird draws on these engineering skills to resolve the gravity centers of more complex mobiles. Laird's mobiles may be found locally in Concord (5/3rd Bank), Huntersville (Lake Forest Community Church), and Salisbury (Olde Stone Vineyard.) Laird is a sculptor whose muse moves. Laird started making copies of Calder mobiles as a teenager and continues his exploration of the mobile art form today. Laird explores abstract subjects similar to Calder as well as figurative works. His sculpture may include metal, wood, plastic and/or electronics.
