Izel Vargas is a graduate of the Master of Fine Arts program at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill. He has exhibited his work in galleries and museums throughout the state, including the Ackland Art Museum in Chapel Hill, as well as in Texas and Mexico. Growing up in southern Texas a few miles from the Mexican border, Vargas combines images from Latino, Hispanic, and Anglo popular culture to express the fragmentation of life on the border. His mixed-media compositions explore the impact of immigration laws on issues such as assimilation and displacement.
