Jason Lord

“Through my multimodal, creative research, I find and ask questions; at the center of my exploration is the question, what does it mean to be human?”

Jason Lord is an interdisciplinary artist, designer, and educator who engages in rigorous conceptual, material, and procedural experimentation through drawing, installation, print, sculpture, assemblage, artist books, social practice, performance, writing, sound, video, photography, ritual, and their many intersections.

His practice is prolific and his work is often obsessive, often pushing at the boundaries between craft, art, and design, and always seeking answers to the core questions, what does it mean to be human? and what can art do?

Jason holds a BFA in Studio Art from UNC-Chapel Hill and an MFA in Studio Arts from UNC-Greensboro. He has exhibited widely and has received Fellowships from the Vermont Studio Center, the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, the Hambidge Center, the Peter Bullough Foundation, and Penland School of Craft.

ARTIST STATEMENT:

Through visual and performing arts, I investigate the relationships between time, repetition, and attention; the role of rituals and rules; and the powers and limitations of language. My practice is inherently interdisciplinary, encompassing drawing, installation, sculpture, experimental sound and video, artist books, music composition, painting, printmaking, photography, social practice, and performance. These modalities intersect as tools for exploring complex systems: the fractal geometry of a fern, the poetics of urban planning, or the fragmented and intersectional nature of identity.

My work is varied and expansive, an ongoing exercise in inquiry that finds strength in the disencumbered nature of a broad, dynamic practice. At the heart of it is a commitment to experimentation, curiosity, and uncovering new possibilities for understanding our world. I employ durational rituals and material play to push boundaries, creating immersive installations and artifacts that blend formal, conceptual, and performative elements. Through my work, I continually ask two questions that inform my investigation into the nature of humanity; what does it mean to be a human being? and what can art do?
