After studies at Birmingham School of Art in the United Kingdom and Academie de la Grande Chaumiere, Paris and teaching appointments at Stourbridge College of Art and Royal College of Art, painter John Walker (pictured, in plaid shirt) came to the United States in 1969 through the Harkness Fellowship. His work is characterized by a remarkable sense of energy and directness. Throughout Walker's long career, he has moved back and forth, and in-between, abstraction and represenation in unexpected and original ways. His war paintings are memorials inspired by his father's recollections of WWI and poetry by David Jones and Wilfred Owen. The sheep-soldier image represents his father and is visualized in other media such as ink drawings and exquisite etchings.
Walker will be collaborating with Master Printer Steve Andersen while in residence at McColl Center.
