Francisco Alvarado is a self-taught painter who approaches art as a kind of joyful escape from his work as an engineer and businessman. He paints intuitively, following a feeling rather than a fixed plan. The results range from recognizable scenes to full-blown abstraction and often land somewhere in between. On the main wall, you can see that shift play out: a loose, textured flower feels just as energetic as the nearby abstract piece, while a more representational landscape begins to dissolve into color and gesture. It’s like watching a photo slowly blur into a dream.
Inspired by places he’s traveled, the mood of a moment, and the surprises of the material itself, Alvarado paints for discovery. He’s not afraid to take risks, try new techniques, or revisit an idea to push it further. He’s drawn to contrast, challenged by shadows, and fueled by texture and light. Van Gogh is a major influence, not just in color, but in the emotional force of the work.

These paintings aren’t about getting it “right.” They’re about capturing a feeling. They’re personal, persistent, and playful. And above all, they remind us that sometimes the best work comes from following your instincts.
Select pieces will be available through a silent auction with all proceeds benefiting the Marand Scholarship Fund — empowering students pursuing careers in STEM.
